Sunflowers are not my favourite flower, but I they are a flower that really puts itself out there which I find do like. Tracking the sun all day they are jaw dropping when passing by a field full of them, and yet just as admirable when a singleton has grown itself out of a crack in the pavement.
Where is the intrigue then? It's the math! The giant flowers are a demonstration of the mathematical rule shaping the patterns of life: the Fibonacci sequence. Each number is the sum of the previous two (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, ...), found in everything from pineapples to pine cones.
It's mesmerizing. And was quite fun to play with when creating this design. And the basket weave background? It was inspired by a 1878 wallpaper design by Bruce James, Talbert as part of the Victoria and Albert Museum collection.
